Great
Neck Middle School
Great
Neck Middle School is an "average" size middle school for
Virginia Beach with an enrollment of approximately 1000 students. The
school is an older high school building which became a junior high in
1983 and transitioned to middle school in 1992. The three grade
levels of grades 6, 7, and 8 are physically separated in so far as possible
with separate lunch and elective bells. Within the constraints of the
physical facility, each grade level tends to operate as its own smaller
and separate school with heavy reliance on the core team concept. In
spite of the age of the facility, Great Neck is able to offer a wide
variety of exploratory classes, physical education classes, and extracurricular
programs. The student body at Great Neck Middle School includes
a diverse mix of ethnic, academic, and financial backgrounds.
Twenty percent of the students are on free and reduced lunch and seventeen
percent are minority students. Eighteen percent of the students receive
special education services while twelve percent are identified as gifted
and benefit from gifted services.
Mission
Statement
The
faculty and staff of Great Neck Middle School in partnership with the
community are dedicated to provide the skills and environment necessary
to help students reach their potential.
Philosophy
With an attitude
of high expectations, enthusiasm, and sincere interest, the staff of
Great Neck Middle School strives to meet the academic, emotional, social,
and physical needs of every child. Realizing that growth does not occur
at the same level for every child, the staff strives to diagnose these
differences and provide for the individual development. The effort should
be a cooperative endeavor of the school, students, home and community.
The ultimate goal is to enable each student to function flexibly, independently
and achieve his full potential while developing a positive self-concept.
In
accomplishing these goals, it is imperative that the curriculum be flexible,
adaptable and continuously evaluated. The facilities must be safe and
conducive to optimum instruction. Through instruction and personal example,
Great Neck Middle School's faculty and staff encourage intellectual
curiosity, moral integrity, and responsible citizenship in their students.
